Alterations in Gingival Symmetry
In the normal and cosmetic relationship of gum tissues in the front part of the mouth, there should be symmetry between the teeth on the right and left sides. The two central incisors (front teeth) should be the same size and should equal that of the canine teeth (eye teeth). The lateral incisors (next to the central incisors) should be a millimeter or so shorter at the gum line. When this relationship is not present then a cosmetic problem exists and periodontal plastic procedures are undertaken to correct this problem. A detailed diagnosis is made and then the gum and sometimes the bony tissues are reshaped to establish the necessary symmetry.
