Complete diagnosis and treatment planning Dr. Lovelace will thoroughly examine your mouth to detect any pathologic condition present. This examination and x-rays will be used to determine the necessary treatment required in your case. A thorough cleaning that includes scaling of the crowns of the teeth to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) is a first step. The roots of diseased teeth will be planed to remove calculus and allow the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the root surface. Antiseptics and antibiotics may be used during non-surgical treatment.
When periodontal pockets are five millimeters or deeper in depth, it is impossible for a patient or a dentist to thoroughly remove the poisonous plaque and calculus (tartar) which cause the gum infection. Periodontal surgery is required in these cases to allow Dr. Lovelace access to the diseased root surfaces. He will clean the roots below the gum tissue, treat the diseased bone, place bone grafts if necessary, and place the gum tissue in a new position which allows the patient a better chance to clean the teeth. Systemic and topical antibiotics may be used during this procedure.
This procedure uses a bone substitute (patient’s own bone, freeze dried donor bone, or synthetic bone) to help build up bone lost due to periodontal disease or trauma. The grafted bone substitute acts as a scaffold for the patient’s regenerating bone to grow upon. Clinical success will vary with each patient treated. Tissue Grafting This type of periodontal surgery attempts to repair or enhance your smile or correct ravages of disease or trauma. Our goal is to improve your oral health and improve your appearance. Extractions with Bone Preservation Whenever teeth are removed due to trauma or extraction, a large amount of the jaw bone that supported the teeth will be lost. It is now possible to place a bone graft into the socket of a lost tooth to help maintain the previous bone level.
As a component of orthodontic treatment, periodontal surgery is utilized to uncover hidden teeth, replace or move gum tissue, or remove excessive gum tissue to better expose the new straighter smile. Some cases are more complex and require multiple treatments to obtain the desired results.
Periodontal Maintenance treatment The most important aspect of periodontal treatment is the continued, regular maintenance visits to the periodontist. Dr. Lovelace and his hygienists will determine the proper cleaning interval required for you to maintain your smile. It is very important that you continue regular visits with your general dentist. Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Unfortunately, 95 million Americans avoid the dentist due to anxiety and fear. The good news is that safe and effective sedation techniques are available to allow these patients to obtain the care they need and deserve.
